A rude village man once insulted Gautama Buddha. "You have no right teaching others, you are nothing but a fake." Buddha was not upset. He asked, "If you buy a gift for someone, and that person does not take it, to whom does it belong?" The man replied, "It would still belong to me, since I bought the gift." Buddha smiled, "It is the same with your anger. You became angry with me, but I was not insulted. Therefore the anger falls back on you. You are the one who becomes unhappy, not me. All you have done is hurt yourself."
