Amma was making dosai pancakes for breakfast for her two sons, Vignesh, age seven, and Chandran, age five. The boys got into a terrific argument over who was going to get the first dosai. They grew loud and rowdy. Amma saw this as a teaching opportunity, so she quieted the boys and said. "Now boys, do you know what Ganesha would do? He would say, 'Give the first dosai to others.' Ancient Lamp Offering
Aavilakku, or "flour lamp" is possibly the oldest prasada, or food offering, in the world. It began with the Veddas of Sri Lanka, an indigenous "proto-Australoid" people dating back to the 6th century bce and related to the Australia's Aborigines. Veddas believe they came to Earth long ago from the Pleiades constellation, led by the God Murugan (Karttikeya). They landed in Kathiragama, Sri Lanka, and established the worship of Murugan that continues to this day. As an offering to Him they molded lamps from pounded millet, honey and banana. These were fueled with ghee, and strands from the lotus stem served as the wick. This six-lamp offering represents the six stars of the Pleiades. A few hours of burning cooks the dough, which is then broken up and served.
