DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA, December 16, 2001: The eighth International Conference on Tamil Culture, held for the first time in South Africa, ends in Durban today. Topics at the two-day conference at the Coastlands Conference Centre include the history of Tamils in South Africa and the world, the role of women in Tamil society, the view of the youth of the Tamil language, and the morals practiced by Tamil society. “Our aim is to get the youth to become aware and be able to appreciate what is theirs as a culture, language and heritage, and therefore what gives them their unique identity,” said Nagalingam Moodley, CEO of the conference. “We are also saying our children and our community, as Tamils, must never be ashamed of who they are within this country because we should not be looking at ourselves as a minority but rather as part and parcel of the entire majority, because we too have played a significant role in getting this country to where it is as a democracy.” Among the aims of the conference is to have Tamil reintroduced into the school syllabus.
