TAMIL NADU, INDIA, September 7, 2021 (casualwalker.com): After the 2004 tsunami archaeologists discovered rock inscriptions and evidence of a temple exposed by the waves near Saluvankuppam village, four miles north of Mamallapuram in Kanchipuram district. The Archaeological Survey of India of Chennai believes that the temple may well be the oldest Subrahmanya temple to be excavated in the state. While the skinny, tabular bricks in the highest part were set by the Pallavas (300ce-900ce), the larger bricks beneath date back to the Sangam period (600bce-300ce). The temple was built on a cushion of alluvium on which a layer of bricks were set. It is believed the temple was destroyed by waves in the 8th century, then rebuilt, the destroyed again.
