INDIA, August 1, 2022 (Hindu Wire): Nag Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan. In Hindu tradition, serpents are also considered as ornaments of Lord Shiva. There are many snake temples in India, one of them is the temple of Nagchandreshwar in Ujjain which is situated on the third floor of the famous Mahakal temple. This temple is open only on Nag Panchami for 24 hours once a year. This year Nag Panchami falls on the second of August. The administration has built a foot bridge for the devotees to visit, where previously darshan was performed with the help of temporary stairs.
It is believed that Nagraj Takshak himself (king of the Nagas) resides in the temple. In the Nagchandreshwar temple there is a wonderful statue from the 11th century, in which Shiva and Parvati are sitting on the seat of a snake spreading its hood. It is said that this statue was brought here from Nepal. Apart from Ujjain, there is no such statue anywhere in the world. For its darshan, the gates of the temple will be opened at 12 o’clock on Monday night. At 12 o’clock on Tuesday night, the doors of the temple will be closed again for a year. According to beliefs, the snake king Takshak did severe penance. Bholenath was pleased with his penance and he gave the boon of immortality to Takshak Nag, the king of snakes. It is believed that from then on the Takshak king started living in the company of the Lord. But before residing in the Mahakal forest, it was his intention that there should not be any disturbance in his solitude, so it has been the practice for years that he is available for darshan only on the day of Nagpanchami.
