VAL-MORIN, CANADA, July 24, 2023 (L’info du Nord, translated from the original French): As has been the case every year for decades, the religious Kavadi ceremony took place in the streets of Val-Morin on the weekend of July 21 to 23. The participants of this ritual use music and pain to purify themselves of their sins or to ask for favors. This pain can be judged by the extent of the means that some take to purify themselves. Several are suspended for hours by hooks through the skin of their backs. Others dance until exhaustion while carrying heavy kavadi frames on their shoulders. During the ceremony, which includes a grand march, offerings of milk and flowers are made to the Tamil God Murugan. In addition to thousands of participants, this ritual has attracted hundreds of curious people to the streets of this small village of three thousand in southern Quebec province for years. It was started there by Swami Vishnudevananda in 1962.
