KEDARNATH, INDIA, June 20, 2024 (Oneindia): An avalanche occurred early Sunday morning on June 30th near Gandhi Sarovar in Uttarakhand’s Kedarnath, a famed pilgrimage destination with hundreds of thousands of visitors. The avalanche struck a hill about 2.5 miles away from the Kedarnath temple around 5 am. Authorities quickly informed that there were no casualties or damage to property. Senior Superintendent of Police Rudra Prayag, Dr Vishakha Ashok Bhadane, confirmed that the avalanche was due to the cracking of snow caused by sunlight. Thankfully, there was no loss of lives. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to evaluate any potential risks or additional impacts. Last week, a condolence meeting was held in Kedarnath Dham to pay tribute to the victims of the devastating flood disaster of 2013 which engulfed the town when a glacial lake above the temple broke. The video served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the region and the importance of being vigilant.
