INDIA, August 20, 2024 (Business-Standard): India emerged as the leading country of origin and destination for Hindu migrants globally in 2020, with 7.6 million Hindus born in India now living elsewhere and about three million Hindus born in other countries living in India, according to a new analysis by the Pew Research Center. The report titled “The Religious Composition of the World’s Migrants” also revealed that at 47 per cent, Christians make up the largest share of the migrant population across the world. The report highlighted Hindus, including those born abroad, are underrepresented among global migrants, constituting only 5 per cent compared to their 15 per cent share of the total population.

According to the report, more than 280 million people, or 3.6 per cent of the world’s population, were living as international migrants in 2020. “Religion plays a significant role in migration patterns, influencing both the departure from the homeland and the reception in the destination country,” the report noted. The report also highlighted that India is among the countries where emigrants disproportionately belong to religious minorities. The majority of migrants from India are located in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, the report said. As many as 9.9 million Indians reside in these nations, as of 2020.
