TRINIDAD, August 26, 2024 (Trinidad Express): Dr Deokinanan Sharma, 87, was remembered as the visionary who helped transform the sugarcane fields of Endeavour, Chaguanas, into a site that is regarded as the foremost institution for Indian culture, the Divali Nagar, now known as the NCIC (National Council for Indian Culture) Nagar. For more than 30 years, Sharma had dedicated his life to the NCIC, serving as its president and chairman of the Divali Nagar for 22 years. In a social media post yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley praised the former NCIC president for his contribution to Indian culture. “I extend my sincerest condolences to the family of Dr Sharma, the Indian community and the nation on the passing of an iconic figure so well deserving of the accolades heaped upon him at this time of sadness,” the prime minister said. Rowley added that Sharma, who came from humble beginnings and contributed to the fields of engineering and culture, “chose a path of decency and hard work and rose to high levels as a nation builder in the young Trinidad and Tobago”.
