GUYANA, September 9, 2024 (Stabroek News): The event, held at the Badrinaath Ashram in Spring Garden, Region Two, featured a variety of cultural activities, including singing, dancing and prayers. Before the opening of the program, there was live tassa music. Attendees were given the opportunity to view books written in Sanskrit and Hindi. Delivering the feature address, Indian High Commissioner Guyana, Dr. Amit Telang, praised the ashram’s efforts in promoting Indian culture. He highlighted the strong relationship between India and Guyana and acknowledged the cultural and traditional heritage that the ancestors brought to Guyana during indentureship. Dr. Telang noted that the celebration of Sanskrit reflects the preservation of these traditions and that the cultural performances offered unique and enriching experiences. “It takes a lot of effort; culture and tradition cannot last without dedication,” he said, commending the work being done to preserve Indian heritage.

Meanwhile, Director of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre Shri Rudra Jayanta Bhagawati, who also addressed the gathering, noted that they were celebrating two significant events: Viswa Sanskrit Diwas and Bharat Saptah. He explained that Viswa Sanskrit Diwas, initiated by the Government of India, is an annual event focused on reviving and promoting the ancient Sanskrit language. The day is observed on Shraavana Poornima, the full moon day of the Shraavana month in the Hindu calendar, and has been celebrated since 1969. In addition to celebrating Sanskrit, Bharat Week aims to showcase various aspects of India’s unique and vibrant culture. The week’s activities include cultural presentations, craft fairs, food festivals, painting competitions, and screenings of films about India. Bhagawati also highlighted plans to create academic corners in schools and organizations throughout Guyana, where books on Indian history, philosophy, languages, and performing arts can be made available to foster a deeper understanding of India.
