BALI, INDONESIA, March 3, 2025 (YouTube): A Hindu temple in Singaraja, Bali was broken into last April. Twelve figurines of Hindu Gods and Goddesses, a dagger and two silver plates were stolen. The thieves were eventually caught but the items were never recovered. These objects have been passed down for generations and now they are gone. Such theft is not uncommon in Bali. As a Hindu majority population there is a temple in every village and a shrine in almost every household. Some of the religious artefacts in these temples can fetch up to thousands of dollars. But it is their historical and religious significance that makes them priceless. For Balinese these artifacts are sacred. They are blessed in special rituals and thus revered. The Balinese believe some artifacts are sacred and possess the power to protect a community. So when they are stolen, costly elaborate rituals have to be performed to replace them.
