INDIA, April 25, 2025 (India.com): Religious conversion is a highly controversial and sensitive topic in India, but interestingly, countries in Europe and the Americas have the largest number of populations that have converted to another faith from their birth religion, or turned into atheists who do not believe in any religion. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, Christians and Buddhists are at the forefront of leaving their birth religion and express interest in choosing another faith, while Hindus and Muslims rarely leave their respective religions.
As per the survey, about 18 percent, Americans who were born into Hinduism, do not identify as Hindus anymore, with a majority of them converting to other faiths, especially Christianity, while a good portion have turned atheists. Sri Lanka has the second-highest number of Hindu converts, with 11 percent leaving Hinduism and joining other faiths, majorly Christianity. According to the Pew Research study on world’s fastest growing religions, Christianity is currently the most followed religion on earth, accounting for 31 percent of the world’s 7.3 billion population, followed by Islam in second place, and Hinduism in the third spot. However, this dynamic will drastically change over the next three-and-a-half decades as Muslim population is expected to witness a significant rise, making Islam the dominant faith globally, the report predicts.
