KASHMIR, INDIA, July 29, 2019 (Al Jazeera): Hindu pilgrims looking for enlightenment are flocking to Amarnath Cave in Indian-administered Kashmir in growing numbers. The pilgrims travel over 8.7 miles of hostile terrain to one of India’s holiest shrines. But environmentalists say the waste they leave behind is threatening the environment and polluting Kashmir’s main water source with little government regulation. Locals set up small restaurants and kitchens and the waste they produce is dumped in glaciers and streams. Short video on the pollution can be viewed at “source”.
