SRINAGAR, December 13, 2023 (Times Now News): Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) authorities began to repair the damaged boundary wall of Shardha Peeth a day after Home Minister Amit Shah registered a complaint about it. Kashmiri Pandits have also raised the issue of Shardha Peeth with the PoK Civil administration. Shardha Peeth Temple, situated in Neelam Valley of PoK, is an ancient temple and used to be the highest seat of learning. Dedicated to the Hindu Goddess of learning, the 2,500-year-old Sharda Peeth is now an abandoned temple. Established in 237 BC during the reign of Ashoka, the ancient temple was one of the foremost temple universities of the Indian subcontinent between the 6th and 12th centuries CE. It is among the three famous holy sites for Kashmiri Pandits, the other two being the Martand Sun Temple in Anantnag and the Amarnath Cave temple.

The temple has been built on the banks of the Kishanganga river along the LoC, which divides the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located in Neelam Valley across the LoC in PoK. Over the years the Pakistani Army has helped locals to encroach the land of Shardha Peeth and damage the temple premises. The Save Shardha Committee, which has members from both sides of LoC, wrote to district officials in Neelam Valley and demanded that the temple be protected and encroachments be removed. As per revenue records the temple has 9 acres of land but now there are only 1.25 acres with the temple and the rest has been encroached. Over the years, Kashmiri Pandits have demanded that they be allowed to visit the temple and safeguard the premises.
