TRINIDAD, May 9, 2024 (for HPI, by Paras Ramoutar): Coming on the heels of the recent Epic Hanuman Chalisa Chanting, on Saturday April 27, where over 15 ,000 devotees participated, Lord Hanuman was one of several murtis smashed on Tuesday morning at the Bharatiyas Vidya Abhyas Mandali, Watts Street, Curepe. Among other murtis smashed were Lord Shiva and Mother Durga, and this act of violence has caused great consternation not only among the Hindu community, but other religious groups as well. Legal adviser to the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha(SDMS), this country’s premier Hindu organization, Dinesh Rambally, an Opposition Member of the Parliament, representing the United National Congress in the Chaguanas West Constituency, noted that it was, “a hate crime” and it is the result of political silence where there have been several attacks over the recent years, and no one was held and charged for the these acts of vandalism.

Rambally said that this act of desecration points to a targeted attack on the Hindu community and Hinduism overall. He said while he left the law of the land to take its natural course, he hoped that it would not be ignored by the state. Rambally added: ” We do hope that something will come out of this particular incident because all the incidents that occurred before nothing has materialized out of those in terms of anyone being brought to justice or charged”. He pointed out that the SDMS will be involved in, “a period of atonement” where rituals will be conducted to return the auspiciousness to the mandali, and following this exercise there would be swift retribution that will have to be performed from a religious practice.”This kind of behavior must not come to become part of our religious or social landscape”, he added. Several cultural and religious groups have severely criticized the actions of Hindu haters. The Anjuman Sunnatul Jamaat Association, the premier Muslim group in Trinidad and Tobago, has called to the perpetrators who vandalize places of worship to stop these acts of desecration to defile religious institutions in the nation.
