LONDON, ENGLAND, May 28, 2001: Weekend rioting between whites and Asians in Oldham in the English have exposed volatile tensions in what is outwardly one of Europe’s most stable multi-ethnic cultures. The authorities today blamed members of the white supremacist National Front for the two nights of rioting in which 30 people were injured. Many of the rampaging 15-25 year olds are the children of textile workers who immigrated in the 1960’s. Unemployment and tensions are high. The Conservative’s candidate for the upcoming Prime Minister election has made comments alluding to the loss of England to “bogus asylum seekers” in an attempt to turn whites from the Labor Party’s more inclusive tack. Though the country’s minorities make up 5.5 percent of the population, they account for less than 3 percent of the electorate and just 1.5 percent of the membership of Parliament.
