There is no one greater in the three worlds than the guru. It is he who grants divine knowledge and should be worshiped with supreme devotion. –Atharva Veda, Yoga-Shikha Upanishad 5.53

The disciple who desires to see the guru happy should not visit him empty-handed, since the guru is a person to be adored like a king. Hence, fruits, flowers and betel leaves should be offered first to the guru at the time of worship. –Chandrajnana Saivagama, Kriyapada 2.31-2
