Eighty students from around America came to Camp Nawaka in East Otis, Massachusetts, to immerse themselves in Sanskrit for five days in May, 2003. This was "Paavinii," the second national Sanskrit camp by Samskrita Bharati, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the revival of Sanskrit language and culture (see July, 2003, issue).
Each day began at 5:45 am with meditation and yoga. Classes on Sanskrit speaking, listening, literature and grammar were taught by volunteer instructors in the style of an ancient Hindu gurukulam.
Participants enjoyed the nearby lake, joined in games, sang devotional songs, relished vegetarian meals and discussed Sanskrit culture and history with Sri Krishna Shastry, founder of Samskrita Bharati.
